A Course in Miracles: A Sublime Meditation

A Course in Miracles (ACIM) is basically a course that helps one to remove one’s ignorance about the world and oneself, and about the creator of both. What I think is the meat of the Course is the section of 365 lessons that shakes one’s notions loose so that a new perception of reality can arise. Well, not a new perception; it is an old perception that has just been obscured by the belief that we are separate from God.

Being that we have been living by the false notion that we are separate from the Source of our Being, we live in a state of illusion that there is an outside where others are out to get us. And so we keep creating our world to confirm our delusions. And we appear to live in a world where we are nothing but bodies, born in a period of time, and quickly gone in the fearful snatching of death.

However, the Course gently leads one to a the new perception that we are only looking through the glasses of separation. And when we take them off we see a world where there is only God. Forms come and go but the Divine Essence that All That Is shares with all beings and all things, remains forever the same. Without those distorted glasses fear is no more. Only Love, only Unity remains.

When one arrives at Lesson 189 of the Course one has been led through the delusions of the mind to come to a more ripened place of revelation of what is True. When I read the following passage so many years ago I knew that this Course was true to the mark, that it contained such profound wisdom.

MEDITATION

Simply do this:

Be still,

and lay aside all thoughts of what you are

and what God is;

all concepts you have learned about the world;

all images you hold about yourself.

Empty your mind

of everything it thinks is either true or false,

or good or bad,

or every thought it judges worthy,

and all the ideas of which it is ashamed.

Hold onto nothing.

Do not bring with you one thought the past has taught,

nor one belief you ever learned before from anything.

Forget this world,

forget this course,

and come with wholly empty hands onto your God.

This passage is a meditation that will free you; for you will go beyond the chattering of the mind. The mind no longer will rule your life when you can go to this place that the Course asks you to go. Here, beyond the mind, awaits God, or the Divine Self, free from the cold grasp of time. Here there is no birth or death. Only That which Is.

When you come to this place where you always exist (despite what the mind tells you, and its echoing from the rest of the world), fear is no more. For what is there to fear? There is only the Love of Unity.
